Great read! book focuses on computing but there's lots to learn, like recycling and how children in poverty are challenged by a lack of basic needs.

Witty, educational, and thought-provoking - all in one book! I love the idea of creating a fantasy world in which to educate children subtly, not only about technological concepts, but also about values such as caring selflessly for ones family and for the environment.

Author's Message
I also noticed that there weren’t many fictional stories designed to make Computing exciting and accessible for children. That’s why I combined storytelling with learning: a glossary at the back of the book explains the digital terms, while the narrative introduces Computing ideas in a way that feels natural and inspiring.
But Slums of Senail is more than just a Computing story. It also reflects the real challenges faced by children worldwide (like access to clean water, education, and safety) helping readers build empathy while developing digital literacy skills.
This book is written for children aged 7–11, to encourage them to see Computing as an option for their future studies while enjoying a story they can’t put down.
📖 Parents, you can extend the learning by exploring the FREE learning linked to the story, giving your child opportunities to deepen their understanding and creativity beyond the book.

As both a mum and a Computing teacher, I wanted to create a story that sparks curiosity, builds confidence, and shows children how Computing connects to their everyday lives. Many children don’t realise that the technology around them (like routers, modems, or online services) is part of the bigger world of Computing. Through Slums of Senail, I bring these concepts to life in an imaginative, fantasy adventure that helps children recognise and understand them in a fun, engaging way.

Sustainability
Slums of Senail is more than just a Computing story.
It also reflects the real challenges many children face around the world and introduces ideas of global sustainability; like the importance of education, supporting families in poverty, and reusing or recycling materials wherever possible.
Activity: Look at the picture below. What items can be recycled? Can you spot these same items in your own home, school, or everyday environment?
